You are invited to
CJI's Fundraising Event

This year's event includes a full buffet dinner, silent auction, and inspirational stories from two mothers.

"In This Together"

Dona Cadman first met Supriya Deas in a courthouse under the most difficult of circumstances. Dona’s son, Jesse, had been murdered by Supriya’s son, Isaac. Many years later, in a meeting facilitated by staff from Community Justice Initiatives' (CJI's) Victim Offender Mediation Program, they spoke again.

Dona and Supriya’s telling of the story of their journey from the pain and anguish of losing a son and of being the parent of a teen who has committed a violent offence, to a place of healing, hope and peace is moving and inspiring.

On October 18, 1992, Jesse Cadman, 16 years old, was fatally stabbed by Isaac Deas, 17 years old, while walking home from a bus stop.  It was an unprovoked and random attack.  Before the stabbing, Isaac and his friends had been partaking in drugs and alcohol and when one of the youths in the group saw Jesse walking on the other side of the street they decided to rush over and start beating him.  Things escalated.  Isaac pulled out a knife and stabbed Jesse in the back, piercing his heart and lung.  The youths fled, leaving Jesse to die on the side of the road.

Police arrested Isaac a few days later.  He was charged with, and later convicted of, 2nd degree murder.  Throughout the trial, there was never a reason or explanation given for the murder.  There was no reason for the senseless act of violence.  There was also no evidence of any expression of remorse.  In fact, there seemed to be no emotion whatever displayed by Isaac in the courtroom.

Dona Cadman is Jesse's mother.  Supriya Deas is Isaac's mother.  The women first met in a courthouse.  Many years later, they spoke again.

Two years ago Jesse's sister, Jodi, spoke at CJI's fundraising event.  The evening was profoundly moving as she shared her story.  This year we will hear from the two mothers, and how they came to be "In This Together".
