Restorative Action in Schools:
TALKING PEACE NEW!
Prerequisite: None
Learn about implementing Restorative Justice creatively in elementary
school classrooms and other settings appropriate to that age group using
practical and fun activities that reinforce the basic principles. This
two-day session focuses on Talking Peace,
the elementary school resource developed by CJI in partnership with the
Langley School District #35. Time will be spent exploring that resource
and, as time permits, other examples of how Restorative
Justice can be applied in the elementary school context.
Fall 2008/Winter 2009 Dates TBA
Restorative Action in Schools: CONVERSATION PEACE
Prerequisite: None
If you work in a
setting involving youth, this course is applicable to you. It is
based on CJI's experiences implementing the Educating
for Peacebuilding program in the Langley School District
#35. The focus is on "Restorative Action" philosophy,
principles and tools which encourage responses to youth conflict
that are needs-based and promote healing and accountability. The
training is presented in a hands-on format that includes skills for
working with conflict and mediation in the context of a restorative
framework. The session focuses on Conversation
Peace, a curriculum developed by CJI in partnership with the
Langley School District #35, which has been implemented with youth and
adults in a number of secondary schools. Experienced coaches assist with
skills practice and enhance the learning experience. Certificates of completion will be presented.
Course Materials: A copy of the Conversation Peace student workbook is
included in the course fees. The
Conversation Peace trainer manual is not a requirement for
the course but is available to class participants for $75 (25% off the
regular price) should they wish to purchase it.
Fall 2008/Winter 2009 Dates TBA
Inviting Dialogue:
COMMUNICATING RESTORATIVELY IN CONFLICT
Prerequisite: None
Conflict is a natural part of day-to-day life. While conflict can be
destructive, understanding its dynamics and having the skills to engage
in productive dialogue can lead to positive outcomes. This two-day
workshop focuses on the elements of conflict, on how misunderstandings
and relationship break-downs emerge, and on ways to prevent conflict
situations from escalating. Learn to be an effective listener,
reflecting curiosity and non-judgment rather than defensiveness. The
skills and concepts covered in this course are transforming for everyday
life and for Restorative Justice based processes. It may be taken
independently or as part of CJI's Inviting Dialogue certificate program.
Participants receive a copy of CJI's Inviting Dialogue: Restorative
Justice & Victim Offender Mediation training manual.
Fall 2008/Winter 2009 Dates TBA
Inviting Dialogue:
MEDIATING
IN A RESTORATIVE JUSTICE CONTEXT
Prerequisite:
"Communicating Restoratively in Conflict" or permission of the
instructor
When a harmful event occurs, instead of focusing on punishment the
response can be about healing and accountability, resulting in more
satisfying outcomes for all concerned. Learn about the foundation,
concepts and applications of Restorative Justice and gain an
understanding of its use and relevance in criminal contexts as well as
in aspects of day-to-day life. The course includes skills that
will benefit your community and expands the possibilities for what
"justice" looks like. Step by step, the instructor takes you through the
preparation and dialogue of basic victim offender mediation with
opportunities to practice the skills in a hands-on format with
experienced coaches. The course uses the Inviting Dialogue:
Restorative Justice & Victim Offender Mediation training manual that
students will have received in the prerequisite Communicating in Conflict course. Students also
receive a copy of Howard Zehr's Little Book of Restorative Justice.

Restorative Action in Schools:
FOCUS ON IMPLEMENTATION
Prerequisite: None
Come explore options and
strategies for making your school a safer and more respectful place for
all and ways to get buy-in from key stakeholders to get your Restorative
Justice program off the ground. This one-day workshop looks at
opportunities, resources and roadblocks that emerge when considering
implementing Restorative Justice models in school settings. This
discussion will include how to implement, maintain and sustain a
Restorative Justice program, and how to decide which one is right for
your school. Restorative Justice is fully compatible with the social
responsibility goals required to be acted upon in every school in BC.

A COMMUNITY APPROACH TO
RESTORATIVE JUSTICE

punishing the perpetrator? Are there ways that can offer all concerned
an opportunity to have input and feel satisfaction at the outcome? This
community workshop explores the values, principles and processes behind
the Restorative Justice movement and learn how it is being implemented
in Canada's criminal system, schools and communities. Find out how you
can be a part of it in small or larger ways right in your neighbourhood.

Training Materials
-
- CJI
first developed training materials in
1990 to meet the need for a comprehensive victim-offender
mediation training program. The resulting manuals and videotape have
been purchased by programs operating across Canada and
internationally. In 1995, the training manuals were
revised and expanded, and have recently undergone further revision.
Re-titled Inviting Dialogue: Restorative Justice & Victim
Offender Mediation, the manuals (trainer and trainee versions) continue to be the most extensive
victim-offender mediation training materials available in North
America.
-
- More recently, CJI has developed another
set of materials based on its experience with the Educating
for Peacebuilding project in the Langley School District. Conversation
Peace offers a unique approach to secondary school conflict that
is restorative and promotes social responsibility. An additional publication
entitled Talking Peace is now available for
elementary schools. Both can be ordered from the
British Columbia Queen's
Printer.
