Restorative Action draws
International Attention
Professor Bunri Tatsuno from Kokushikan
University and researcher Chie Maekoya from Tokiwa University in
Japan, paid a visit to Langley Fine Arts School on Wednesday January
27. The purpose of their visit was to find out about how Restorative
Action is being used in Langley School District.
Restorative Action is a needs based
response to conflict in schools that addresses the harm and looks to
repair relationships. It is based on Restorative Justice Principles
and values, but adapted to the school setting.

Chehalis Restorative
Action Retreat
As part of
Langley School Districts Restorative Action program, Langley Fine Arts
School (LFA) took part in a three day training retreat at the beautiful
Chehalis Healing House in Harrison Mills, BC. During the retreat,
students learned the principles and values of Restorative Action and how
to apply that knowledge to help resolve conflict within their school.
This is
the fourth year of the retreat and it proved to be a powerful experience
for the students. They not only learned about Restorative Action but
also got to hear from guest speaker Debbie as she shared her story of
strength and healing after a tragic crime and her experience of going
through a Restorative Action process with the offender in her case. The
students gained insight from her story into the range of situations
where
Restorative Action can be
effectively
used,
from school conflicts to serious crime, and the healing power of the
process for both the person harmed and the person who caused the harm.

Helping
with the training at the retreat this year was Alex Holmes, a LFA
graduate who is currently enrolled at UCFV. Alex generously offered her
time to come and help the students learn Restorative Action. They gained
a lot of knowledge from Alex as she shared her skills that came from
four years of being on the Restorative Action team at LFA. Rounding out
the training team was Madeleine Delittle from Langley Fine Arts, Dan
Basham and Carly Hoogeveen from Community Justice Initiatives, and
Boshra Rasti, Restorative Action teacher from Langley School District.
I am truly
grateful to Balan Moorthy, principle at LFA for conceiving of the
retreat idea and being so supportive of Restorative Action at the
school. His vision and determination of implementing Restorative values
has been inspirational for me, the students, and staff at LFA.
